UC Does it again

Well our bearcats did it again, but this time at 12-0! What a season and we were there to see them conquer the Pitt Panthers. It was probably the best college football game I have ever been too and I have been to a bunch. It was pure joy to be able to leave Heinz field on the winning end for the second time in my career.

To their credit, overall the Pitt fans were nice. I can't say the same for Steelers fans. Pittsburgh is a great city and I really enjoyed Carson St. Also Permanti brothers sandwiches are to die for.

Onward and upward to the Sugar Bowl vs. Florida. Should be interesting. Go Cats!

The Kindle for Magazines...

So we believe that eventually digital will power and drive any and all media channels. Above is just another example. Imagine your magazine being delivered in this manner. It's not that far away. i don't get Sports Illustrated anymore, but I think I would have to reconsider if it came to me in this format. Just like the Kindle will revolutionize newspaper I believe tablets such as this will do the same for magazines. After all content is king, how we get content will always be changing.

e media at University of Cincinnati

The rapid transitions in the media industry were the topic of the kick-off panel of a regional conference of the Broadcast Education Association at UC October 16-17.

This presentation consisted of a panel of local industry representatives, the first of whom was Cincinnati Educational Television (CET) chief operating officer Jack Dominic. (Dominic is pictured above with Jim Price)

Dominic said public TV stations today must be “hyper-local”, that is--- to concentrate on programming that interests people in the area that they can't get anywhere else.

CET’s website features an increasing amount of local web programming, which plays an important role in attracting new viewers.

The next panel member was James Jackson, vice president for new media at the Cincinnati Enquirer. The first point he made was that newspapers are not dying--- they are simply moving content to the web.

This changes what is expected of employees in the newspaper business. They are expected to have decent web experience in addition to traditional newspaper skills.

Jackson said while the troubled economy is increasing consumer frugality, it gives innovation a much better chance to be successful.

Finally, he stressed that, there are still plenty of opportunities out there for E-Media grads. Jackson listed four vital qualities for new graduates to have. They should be flexible, smart, inquisitive and adaptable.

The last panel member was new media executive Jim Price of Empower Media Marketing. His message focused on integration---several different advertising vehicles are better than one.

Advertising should be about the consumer first and foremost; your ideas won’t work otherwise.

Price also said that clients are more interested in media strategy than the content of the advertising. That is, “where” and “when” of marketing are more important than the “how”.

The panelists stressed three points about where the industry is going.

The first is that all types of media need to focus on the consumer before all else. Hyper-local media is an example of this---it targets specific groups of people.

Secondly, the industry is becoming more integrated. Most businesses no longer focus entirely on one media platform.

The third point is that even though the economy is bad, jobs are not hard to come by for people with the right media skills and character traits.

The fourth and final point is that employers are looking more at the interpersonal and critical thinking skills of potential employees than anything else, and that real-world experience is still as valued as ever.

This presentation was moderated by E-Media Professor John Owens.

Bear attack in Orlando FL

Below is a story from one of my best friends from college! This is truly amazing.

I just wanted to drop a quick note and say hello to everyone and share a quick story about my Saturday night. Saturday night was one that almost changed (or ended) my life forever! Now that it is over and I am ok I can share this story and let you all have a great laugh!

So we have been having a problem with Raccoons getting into our garbage for the past month or two. About 3 times a week they get into our garbage cans, outside our garage, and when we get up I get the great joy of cleaning up the mess for the next 30 minutes or so. Needless to say it has really been pissing me off! On several occasions I have been working late at night and heard them getting into the garbage after they knock the cans over and so I would go turn on the lights and look outside to see the “coons” tearing the garbage apart and making a huge mess. On more than one occasion I have tried to sneak outside through our front door and creep around the corner of our walkway to where the garbage cans are and try to hit the damn thing with a golf club (Driver – I probably should have chosen another club since I cant hit a driver anyway). I have come close a few times but they still always come back. Now, for those of you who are saying why don’t you just put the garbage cans in the garage, I will remind you that we have a young daughter who despite being potty trained insists on crapping in her pull-ups while she sleeps so the garbage smells pretty bad. In fact on Friday morning when I woke up our garage had been left open all night and there were several bags in the garage that had been torn open and were spread all over the garage and the driveway. I had even planned to have someone bring over a trap during the weekend to bait and catch this damn raccoon because I was so tired of the mess.

So, on Saturday night at about 2 in the morning while everyone else was sleeping I was working in the office when I heard a very large commotion outside and knew immediately that those damn “coons” were back getting into our garbage. So, I decided that this was the night I was going to teach the Raccoon a lesson. I did not turn the lights on outside the garage as I didn’t want them to be able to see me. So, I grabbed my trusty golf club (Driver) and went out the front door and crept down the walkway to the corner where the driveway/garage are and the garbage. However, it was so damn dark when I got to that point that I really couldn’t see anything and could only hear them tearing into the garbage so I decided that trying to get too close might not be the best idea (Smart thinking Huh??). I was about 30 feet away from where the “coon” was so I decided I would just try to scare the “coon” by kind of tapping my driver on the walkway to make a noise and thus scare them away. Well all of a sudden I see this small black animal run away from the garbage toward my neighbor’s yard, and it kind of confused me because it sure didn’t look like a Raccoon. Well it was at that exact moment that I looked back toward the garbage area when my life flashed before my eyes, running at me full speed and out of the darkness (there was some light behind me from the street lights) was a huge Black Mamma bear. I tried to run but she was on me before I could move and I was knocked to the ground. Luckily I did manage to turn and face her and keep her off of me with my feet and my trusty golf club. I am not totally sure what happened at this point but I do know I kicked her, hit her with the golf club, and was able to get to my feet. It was clear she was only trying to protect her cubs because she stopped and only starting growling and hissing at me. I ran (I know you aren’t supposed to run but you guys get in that situation and see what you do) and essentially dove into the house and tried to slam the door behind me. I then ran to get Jaime who was awoken to me bursting into the room yelling “Jaime, I was just attacked by a bear” about a hundred times, you can imagine the thoughts going through her head at this point. After regaining consciousness from the shock we both went to look outside (from the window this time with the light on) and there was my bear still and her 4 cubs eating my garbage. Jaime got to see them and we can both tell you that the Mother bear was easily as tall as my waist on all fours and had to weigh over 400 or 500 pounds. Yes I am OK; amazingly I only had some small cuts and a lot of bruises.

Not sure how many people you know that have ever been attacked by a bear, especially in their driveway in a gated community in Florida!

Fess Says...He's high on the Reds this year!

The Reds are a legit contender for two reasons:

They are playing well and baseball is a watered down sport.

When you have the best pitching staff in the National League, you have to be taken as serious player in the race.

I still think the Reds need to acquire a Jermaine Dye type player if they are going to win the World Series. Aaron Rowand could be a nice pick-up as well. The Reds only have two weaknesses. They have a terrible bench and they lack enough pop to comeback in a game if they get down 3-4 runs in a game.

I think their weakest link is Center Field Willy Taveras is not an everyday. He would be a great bench player or situational player in October.

The Reds other concern is bench depth. However, if they acquire a Jermaine Dye type.....Gomes and Nix would be great sticks off the bench. Although, I really like Lance Nix, he may have a huge year. Surprisingly, Hanagan seems like a serviceable catcher.

Edwin Encarncion is close to returning which scares me. He can only screw up the Karma, fire, and great insticts that Rosales and Hairston have brought to the team. Rosales isn't very talented but he is a winner who gets his job accomplished in whatever situation he is called upon.

Other things that worry me down the stretch:

1) Arroyo only has a 32/22 BB to strikeout ratio. That is a receipt for disaster when you give up as many HRs as he does.

2) Homer Bailey's career - The reason why he is so unsuccessful is that he can't throw his curveball from the same arm slot as his fastball. He might as well just tell good hitters what pitchers are coming. If they really want him to be successful.......they should send him back to High A ball and breakdown his mechanics until he is a completely different and revamp pitcher.

3) Jay Bruce - I think everyone is right about him being the next Larry Walker. However in 2009, he looks more like an Adam Dunn. I realize he is just 22 so I don't mean to rip on him but I will anyway. He is terrible defensively, he is a horrible situational hitter, and is over matched by pitchers with good stuff. On the plus side, he has the most unbelievable opposite field power as any Red of all-time.....alot like Josh Hamilton.

4) Micah Owings - I can't see him ever becoming more than a 5th starter. we got abused in that trade with Arizona.

5) Dusty Baker - please keep our pitchers healthy.

Things I love about this team:

1) Harang, Volquez, Cueto - The only pitching staff that can rival Cincy is Dan Haren, Brandon Webb, and Max Scherzer. (PS. Arizona will win the National League in 2010.....go to Vegas and bet it)

2) The bullpen - The Reds are something like 23-1 when leading after 7 innings.

CoCo hasn't blown a save.....and he looks nasty.
I also think Herrera is going to be a solid left handed specialist in the 7th inning.
David Weathers - is still getting people out in critical situations.
Aurthur Rhodes - wow was I wrong about him. He has been amazing.

3) Ramon Hernandez - I thought this guy could hit in April......but he is a much better hitter than I even thought. I love his approach at the plate.....love it. He tries to drive the ball ahead in the count and he protects the plate, uses the entire field when even or down in the count. He is very impressive.....and he will go on a power surge very soon. He only has 2 homers.....look for him to finish between 16-22 HRs. In addition to his bat, he has played great defensively at 1B in Votto's absence. He sucks behind the dish....but I still think he has been as valuable as any Red not named Votto.

4) Votto - or should I say Vottomatic. Best Reds hitter of our lifetime.

I think the NL Central will come down to Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainright vs Cueto, Volquez, and Harang. The Reds have a better bullpen and the better offense. Hopefully, Dusty walks Albert every time. Also, Let's pray Jake Peavy doesn't go to the Cubs.

I think it's going to be a Red October

Democracy in Iraq

More than 14,400 candidates from more than 400 political entities were registered and approved, and 15 million Iraqis registered to vote. Each voter emerged with one finger dipped in purple ink as proof of voting.

Click Here to read about the peaceful and free elections in Iraq. What great progress that we have made. It burns me that stories like this get so little attention.

I truly believe we will one day look back and realize how important it was to liberate Iraq. After all the turmoil and lives lost, I think it will be important part of the overall health & vitality to the Middle East. Our kids will be thankful.

What a great day from Iraq and the USA.

My Favorite Post on Craigslist. This one made me laugh uncontrollably

OK, let me start off by saying this Xterra is only available for purchase by the manliest of men (or women). My friend, if it was possible for a vehicle to sprout chest hair and a five o'clock shadow, this Nissan would look like Tom Selleck. It is just that manly.

It was never intended to drive to the mall so you can pick up that adorable shirt at Abercrombie & Fitch that you had your eye on. It wasn't meant to transport you to yoga class or Linens & Things. No, that's what your Prius is for. If that's the kind of car you're looking for, then just do us all a favor and stop reading right now. I mean it. Just stop.

This car was engineered by 3rd degree ninja super-warriors in the highest mountains of Japan to serve the needs of the man that cheats death on a daily basis. They didn't even consider superfluous nancy boy amenities like navigation systems (real men don't get lost), heated leather seats (a real man doesn't let anything warm his butt), or On Star (real men don't even know what the hell On Star is).

No, this brute comes with the things us testosterone-fueled super action junkies need. It has a 265 HP engine to outrun the cops. It's got special blood/gore resistant upholstery. It even has a first-aid kit in the back. You know what the first aid kit has in it? A pint of whiskey, a stitch-your-own-wound kit and a hunk of leather to bite down on when you're operating on yourself. The Xterra also has an automatic transmission so if you're being chased by Libyan terrorists, you'll still be able to shoot your machine gun out the window and drive at the same time. It's saved my bacon more than once.

It has room for you and the four hotties you picked up on the way to the gym to blast your pecs and hammer your glutes. There's a tow hitch to pull your 50 caliber anti-Taliban, self cooling machine gun. I also just put in a new windshield to replace the one that got shot out by The Man.
My price on this bad boy is an incredibly low $12,900, but I'll entertain reasonable offers. And by reasonable, I mean don't walk up and tell me you'll give me $5,000 for it. That's liable to earn you a Burmese-roundhouse-sphincter-kick with a follow up three fingered eye-jab. Would it hurt? Hell yeah. Let's just say you won't be the prettiest guy at the Coldplay concert anymore.

There's only 69,000 miles on this four-wheeled hellcat from Planet Kickass. Trust me, it will outlive you and the offspring that will carry your name. It will live on as a monument to your machismo.

Now, go look in the mirror and tell me what you see. If it's a rugged, no holds barred, super brute he-man macho Chuck Norris stunt double, then contact me. I might be out hang-gliding or BASE jumping or just chilling with my ladies, but I'll get back to you. And when I do, we'll talk about a price over a nice glass of Schmidt while we listen to Johnny Cash.

To sweeten the deal a little, I'm throwing in this pair of MC Hammer pants for the man with rippling quads that can't fit into regular pants. Yeah, you heard me. FREE MC Hammer pants.

Rock on.

Winter Skiing in Vail and Beaver Creek

Check out the quick highlight video I took from my recent trip to Beaver Creek with Dick and Heather Williams, John and Katie Anning and Jenny Uhlmansiek. It was an awesome 5 day extravaganza where we did nothing but ski, eat and hot tub. My buddy Dicky Williams and his family have an incredible home in Bachelor Gulch, which is at the top of the mountain in Beaver Creek. One of the benefits of living in Bachelor Gulch is the ability to ski in and ski out of their house. Some of the video shows us slowly skiing around the edges of the trail that lead down from their house.

There is also some good video of a run we took back in the trees of Beaver Creek. We were lucky in that we received a ton of snow while we were there - over two feet in the 5 days. It made for amazing powder that I had never skied in before. Another highlight was the trip to Vail where we skiing an entire day in the back bowls. They were beautiful and not very crowded. It was intimidating staring down those black diamond runs, but the fluffy snow made it a little easier.

Throughout the entire trip I only had one major yard sale where I lost all of my skis and that was in the back bowls of Vail where I skied off a rock. Another run I wish I had never taken was the Cheetah Gulley in Beaver Creek. It gave me quite a challenge.

Orange Bowl Bound...Go Cats!

Yes that's right. Here is me and my boy Benny celebrating a UC win over Pittsburgh. It was one cold evening, but we kept warm with the thought of UC playing in Miami on New Years day. This was the biggest win in UC football history. In a another year of Bengal-doom witnessing the Bearcats clinch their first BCS bowl appearance in the history of the school was pretty special. I wish I could make it to Miami, but I won't be able to make, but I certainly will be rooting for the cats. It's nice to have some Cincinnati sports success!

Fess Says...his take on Bailey for Dye

I feel it would be an outstanding deal for the Reds.

I'm not saying Bailey can't be a great pitcher. Yes, it is typically idiotic to trade young pitching.

However, you can only be in a rebuilding process for so long. The objective for every MLB team is to get all your pieces to a Championship puzzle to mesh together at exactly the right time.

Is this the right time to make a championship run?

The Reds have a young enough rotation to withstand losing Homer Bailey. Volquez appears to turning the corner from underachieving prospect to front-line pitcher. Hopefully his shoulder can stay healthy. I believe in Johnny Cueto. He has too much FIRE to fail. He has the intangibles that every great Major League Player has.....the fire and competitiveness to battle with all the natural tools to become exceptional.

The Reds would be taking a huge gamble by making this Bailey for Dye deal. In 1999, the Reds traded BJ Ryan for Juan Guzman. Juan Guzman pitched outstanding baseball down the stretch in 1999. He went something like 6-1 to put the Reds in position to win the Wild Card but Steve Paris couldn't seal the deal in the one-game playoff.

Back in the 80's, the Tigers Traded John Smoltz for Doyle Alexander. The Tigers went of to win the World Series that year and John Smoltz became a Hall of Famer.

When you have a chance to make the post-season, you have to take very calculated gambles. Deals are not always going to work-out in your favor. It is possible you can make stupid decisions and cripple your franchise like the New York Mets did when they traded Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano.

Every franchise finds themselves in these crossroads one time or another. Build for a Championship......or go after one now.

The Reds are very close to being a legit World Series contender. A lead-off hitter who can roam CF, a right handed bat who can provide the offensive line-up depth and protection, and a dominate set-up man or closer to complement Cordero.

The time is now!

All the Price Siblings together...

Here's a pic from my sister Annie's wedding. Believe it or not this is the first time that she has ever had a pic with all of her siblings together. It was a very exciting moment at her wedding. From left to right is Mary Jesse, me, Annie, Bill and Molly. Bill grew up with Annie in the state of Washington and b/c Annie is so much older than us, we have never really met Bill (except a long long time ago). It was a great weekend for us to see Annie get hitched in beautiful Santa Monica as well as celebrate a sentimental moment with family.

My dad's new Car...the yellow mystery mobile

Yep so my dad is going through some sort of "I'm older and I think I need to get a car where I can add neon and roll the strip for chics" crisis. I am not exactly sure what he is thinking other than he needed something to show people that he really likes the color yellow. Having not ridden in this "thing" yet I am still wondering the motivation behind it's existence. Given he only rides to work for 2 minutes and he now has 2 cars, I am still sligthly confused. If I ever unsolve this mystery, I will let you all know...

The Financial Mess...

Take a look at the video to get a good idea of what caused the financial mess. It all boils down to the Communcity Reinvestment act that was started by the Carter Administration and was never given enough regulation. Unfortunately we are all paying the price for what was a good idea to give low income American's the opportunity for buying a home, but as we all know now, it was a ticking time bomb.

With 17 days left in the season, Baseball is starting to get interesting.

What great races..........The Rays vs Red Sox, Twins vs White Sox, Adam Dunn vs the Dodgers, where the heck did Houston come from? The Astros have passed the phillies and are 3 games out of the playoffs.

Will the Mets, Cubs, Brewers continue to choke? Can the Twins or the White Sox catch the Red Sox's for the wild card.

Baseball is finally here. The Finish Line is in sight........the final sprint down the homestretchis upon us.........look out for Usain Bolt! Who will be Bolt LA?

Fess Says (with my spin)...We are better without Dunn.

If you read all the stats below you can clearly see that we are better without Dunn. I have been a firm believer in this since the beginning. I will trade power hitting, sloppy, error-prone baseball for ,smart, get the runner over, well-executed, station to station baseball any day of the week. For those that want to argue just read below. I think the most telling stat below is the unearned runs per game. On top of that, how many balls do you think were hit that Dunn never even had a chance at getting to? If we accounted for that in the un-earned run column I think we could add even more to the argument below. Let's hope the Reds finish strong and field a team that plays good solid baseball next year.

The Reds have won 4 of 5 and 7 of 10.
They took 2 of 3 from first place Chicago over the weekend
They took game one at Wild Card leader Milwaukee last night
They have played 25 games since the Dunn trade:
Record 13-12
Runs scored per game since trade: 4.76 (4.29 prior to trade)
ERA since trade: 4.39 (4.65 prior to trade)
Unearned runs allowed:
65 in first 119 games prior to trade (unearned run every 1.8 games)
3 in 25 games since trade (unearned run every 8.3 games)
Team batting average:
.246 before trade, .252 since trade
K's per plate appearance
Before trade: 1 every 5.53 plate appearances
Since trade: 1 every 5.48 plate appearances
Walks draw per plate appearance
Before trade: 1 every 10.8 plate appearances
Since trade: 1 every 10.9 plate appearances
HR's per game
Before trade: 1.14
Since trade: 1.12

Golden Bass VII

Every year I travel to Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, GA with 11 of my best friends from Cincinnati. It's a trip we all look forward to as it involves a multitude of events such as Golf, Poker, Cornhole, Indoor Olympics and the infamous Drunken Mule race. In the video above you will see just a few highlights of the trip including some fun we had at the lake. There you will see Kelly Heekin's infamous "gaynor" dive.

You will also see the highlights of the Druken Mule race and the "Hee-can". The "Hee-Can" is a post mule race chug off won this year by Chas Cooke in a truly stellar performance. I don't think you will find a faster chugger than Chas. Even Kelly was impressed and gracefully handed Chas the title.

In this year's titanic struggle the Crop Dusters took home the title (Mercer, Kelly, CJ and Lugi). In second were the Oconee Spa Custodians (Jim, Ben, Scott and Chas) and bringing up the rear were the Putt Huggers (Ryan, Andrew, Natesh and Josh). What you won't see in this video is all the golf we play on the World Championship courses at Reynolds Plantation. The golf is an incredible test in some hot August weather in Georgia.

This years trip was another success and a ton of fun (even though my team didn't win). I already can't wait until next year.
